Microplastics and microfibers in surface waters of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, California

چکیده
Despite a recent report of high concentrations microplastics and microfibers in the mesopelagic waters Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), little is known about these particles surface waters. From 2017 to 2019, we sampled two nearshore offshore locations within MBNMS using manta trawl analyzed samples for microfibers. We found an average concentration 1.32 ± 0.70 (SE) per m3. highest closest shore, lowest above remote Davidson Seamount. Fiber-like debris was more common offshore, as compared nearshore, sites. Overall, our were primarily buoyant synthetic polymers, including polypropylene polyethylene. Our results provide baseline data on degree microplastic microfiber pollution confirm that this can be from at least 1000 m depth.

Effects of Otter Trawling on a Benthic Community in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
Bottom trawling is one of the most disruptive and widespread human-induced physical disturbances to seabed communities and has become a global environmental concern. We used a comparative approach to test the hypothesis that persistent otter trawling decreases bottom habitat complexity and biodiversity, increases the abundance of opportunistic species, and benefits prey important in the diet of...
متن کاملDigestive chitinolytic activity in marine fishes of Monterey Bay, California.
Chitinolytic activities, both chitinase (EC 3.2.1.14) and minimum chitobiase (beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosaminidase; EC 3.2.1.30), were measured in stomach and intestinal tissues and their contents, from 13 fish species. Higher activities were found in the tissues than in the gut contents, and higher activities were seen in the stomachs than in the intestines. Demersal species exhibited chitobiase ac...

from the regional ocean modeling system (ROMS), has three one-way nested domains with the finest resolution of 1.6 km in the horizontal direction and 32 levels in the vertical direction. In present research, the tidal simulation of the system is validated against tide gauges, ADCP current observations, high-frequency radar surface-current observations, and compared with the output from two baro...
متن کاملMarine debris in central California: quantifying type and abundance of beach litter in Monterey Bay, CA.
Monitoring beach litter is essential for reducing ecological threats towards humans and wildlife. In Monterey Bay, CA information on seasonal and spatial patterns is understudied. Central California's coastal managers require reliable information on debris abundance, distribution, and type, to support policy aimed at reducing litter. We developed a survey method that allowed for trained citizen...
متن کاملTwenty Years of Disturbance and Change in Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary, American Samoa
Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary contains a moderately diverse coral reef community (150 coral species, 259 fish species) that is protected from most human activities. The coral community was devastated by a crown-of-thorns starfish invasion in 1979 and has recently been affected by two major hurricanes (1990 and 1991) and a period of unusually high water temperature (1994). Long-term mon...
